The Jenzabar Foundation today announced the winners of its 2009 Student Leadership Awards, recognizing ten student-led campus groups and projects that have made a significant contribution to better the world outside of their institutions of higher education. The winners of the second annual Student Leadership Awards have demonstrated a commitment to making a difference through community service, and their campus groups will receive a $5,000 grant to continue their work. We received so many outstanding nominations this year that we decided to award an additional three student-led activities rather than the planned seven

Nearly 150 Student Leadership Award submissions were received from students, non-profit organizations, and institutions across the globe, representing ongoing activities or projects completed during the 2008-2009 academic year. The nominations were evaluated according to the community service or humanitarian endeavors' beneficiary impact, campus influence, model, outcome, and presentation. Chai Ling Announces $1 Million Humanitarian Effort to Support Human Rights and a Peaceful Democratic China Jenzabar Foundation Administrator 6/3/2009 10:00:00 PM

Chairman of the Board of Advisors for The Jenzabar Foundation, Chai Ling, announced a major commitment to promote democracy in China. Chai Ling was one of the leaders of the peaceful, student-led reform and democracy protests in Tiananmen Square up until the Chinese Government ended them with extreme force after enacting martial law. She was able to escape, after 10 months in hiding, to the United States where she learned English, earned international relations and business degrees, and then launched a start-up business, which through hard work, a decade later became a leading provider of software, services, and strategies for higher education.

The collective $1 million pledge will fund four specific areas over the next five years:

o          Supporting the victims of Tiananmen, many of whom have endured extreme hardship in China or have been forced to live in exile

o          Supporting the Truth Movement, which is dedicated to chronicling the real history of Tiananmen and revealing information that has been lost or censored

o          Supporting human rights and other humanitarian efforts in China and other totalitarian countries or developing countries

o          Supporting efforts underway designed to bring about a peaceful, democratic China

This year's Student Leadership Awards brought in nominations from institutions of higher education, students, and non-profit organizations world-wide. Anyone can register online to join the Jenzabar Foundation Community Network. Once issued a user name and password, participants can then read about the humanitarian projects led by higher education students across the globe and place their votes from now until June 30. The nomination with the most votes will receive the first-place prize of $3,000, a second-place winner will receive a $2,000 award, and the next two highest vote getters will each receive a $1,000 award.

Cash-strapped Optometry Students Give Back in a Big Way

Illinois College of Optometry students receive a Jenzabar Foundation grant to impact underserved communities around the world

Even in this uncertain economy, Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) students are opening their hearts and wallets to volunteer for domestic and global humanitarian missions through Student Volunteers in Optometric Service to Humanity (SVOSH). These missions to underdeveloped communities around the world provide life-changing care for thousands of people in need and allow students to participate in restoring or improving vision while also exposing them to different cultures and diverse eye conditions. The cost of participation limits the number of students who can get involved, but The Jenzabar Foundation awarded a grant to aid ICO’s student chapter of SVOSH in an effort to subsidize the cost and support the humanitarian work of ICO students.
